What is a Personal Branding Statement?

A personal branding statement is a powerful representation of your promise of value to your next employer. It should instantly communicate who you are, the value that you provide, whom you serve and how you are unique. It should generate excitement about what you can do for your target audience.

Everyone is blessed with their own unique set of attributes, strengths and passions that drives them at work and in life, and this is what should form the basis of your branding statement.

Here are some questions to guide you in crafting a compelling personal brand statement that will resonate with your target audience:

  • What are your core values? Your values influence your behaviors, your choices and your emotions. Examples include decisiveness, honesty, perseverance, integrity, pragmatism, social structure, engagement, and teamwork.
  • What are your top 3 or 4 personal attributes – the things that define how you make things happen? These are your 3 or 4 greatest strengths or skills that have benefited your previous companies or employers. How do people around you (at work and elsewhere) describe you? Examples of possible attributes include: collaborative, selling, social, authentic, resourceful, flexible, forward-thinking, risk-taking, connected, visionary, diplomatic, intuitive, communicative, precise, enterprising, ethical and accessible.
  • What are your passions? What do you enjoy doing the most in your personal life and work life? These are the interests, hobbies or topics that energize you.
  • What adjectives best describe the value you offer — e.g., collaborative, focused, intuitive, ethical, authentic, connected, visionary, diplomatic, etc?
  • What differentiates you from your competition for your next job? What do you have to offer that no one else does? This is your USP which was discussed earlier.

A strong personal branding statement answers three questions directly:

  • Who are you?
  • What do you do?
  • Why do you matter to your target audience?

When creating your branding statement, it is crucial to always keep your target audience in mind. Although the statement is about you, it is not necessarily for you. It is for your target audience and about what you can do for them.
