“You are the only one who can control the way you think. Make sure you nourish the positive thoughts, and weed out the negative ones!”Catherine Pulsifer
You can feel confident about yourself, as well as feel positive about others and the world, when you have self-confidence. For people who want to develop their self-esteem, positive thinking can be a powerful tool to help improve both their perception of life and their self-esteem.
Here are seven ways to improve your self-esteem through positive thinking.
1. Develop a Positive Self-Talk Routine.
“In essence, the bulk of our negative self-talk comes from adopting a worldly standard and worldly values as the primary standard through which we filter our thinking.”John Stange
In the world, there is only one person who will always listen to you: yourself. Consequently, if you are going to talk to yourself (and we all do! ), make sure you speak positively and send positive signals. Learning to think more positively about yourself starts with your own internal dialogue. Having the confidence to speak with yourself allows you to perform at your best at all times. Learn to identify and eliminate pessimistic thoughts and therefore self-sabotaging negative self-talk.
2. Instill Confidence Through Self-Affirmations.
“The more positive thoughts you have, the better you feel, which causes you to have more positive thoughts, then you feel even better.”James Borg
Repeat daily affirmations that relate to your belief in yourself if you want to build your confidence. Ideally, you should affirm yourself first thing in the morning and last thing at night. Put in writing two or three statements that describe who you are and what you are capable of (“I am capable of overcoming challenges in my life”) and tell yourself these statements often. Your brain starts to believe that affirmations are true, causing your behavior to match these beliefs.
3. Interact With Confident People
“Being in a positive state of mind is more important than you might think as the mind cannot be creative in a negative state. New ideas, thoughts and inspiration will only take place when the mind is positive.”Joe Hinchliffe
You can build your own confidence by socializing with people who are at ease in their own skin. As you spend more time with confident people, you will see how it is possible to be confident yourself, which will lead to a greater sense of self-confidence. Find some key role models whose confidence and positivity you admire so that you can boost your own.
4. Develop a Confidence Library
“Positive Thinking/Thoughts is the first step to setting your mind to focus on the bright side of life.”Tamara Tilleman
In the same way your body needs nutrition to function, your self-esteem requires fuel to work towards building self-confidence. You should start by making a list of your most noteworthy accomplishments as well as all the reasons you should feel proud of yourself. The next step is to find blogs, movies, articles, and other media that inspire you and help you feel more confident about your accomplishments. When you are feeling down or doubting yourself, keep these handy and refer to them often.
“Approached by someone who wants to achieve a specific dream, many of us offer simple advice: think positive!”Gabriele Oettingen
Self-confidence comes from accepting who you are. Both your strengths and your weaknesses are a part of who you are. Knowing how to build on your talents and gifts only comes from loving all parts of yourself. Having positive thoughts begins with loving oneself.
6. Visualize Yourself Creatively
“It is absolutely critical that you work on being more optimistic and have a positive outlook on life.”Thibaut Meurisse
Visualization can help you develop confidence by helping you think positively. Try to visualize reaching your most prized goal or succeeding in whatever you are striving to achieve. Imagine yourself at your happiest, most loving self. Close your eyes and bring this image to mind every time you doubt yourself. You must imagine yourself as the person you strive to become before you can believe in yourself.
7. Celebrate Your Achievements
“That is what positive thinking is all about. It’s about responding to life’s obstacles with a positive, never-back-down attitude.”Darrin Donnelly
Celebrate every victory you achieve, no matter how big or small. It’s important to recognize each step forward you take, and the more often you give yourself credit, the greater your confidence will become. Celebrating positive thoughts and accomplishments is a good way to reward your efforts, while also reinforcing your ultimate goals.
