Building up your self-confidence is an invaluable, and often overlooked, part of investing in yourself. Without self-confidence, you will easily be discouraged from pursuing your dreams. In case you aren’t sure where to begin when it comes to building your confidence, there are several easy steps you can take.

Keep a Positive Attitude

If you surround yourself with negativity, you will never feel confident about your life or the world around you. Because of this, it is imperative to cultivate a positive outlook. Further, you need to surround yourself with like-minded people.

Once you’ve changed your outlook to one that is more positive, if you find that people around you are bringing you down, change these too. You will feel surrounded by positivity. Your confidence will increase and you’ll stay on track.

“Confidence is contagious. So is lack of confidence.”

Vince Lombardi

Body Language

If you walk around each day with your shoulders slumped and your eyes focused on the ground, you will send a message to others that you are not feeling very confident. In addition, by maintaining that posture, you are communicating to yourself that you don’t feel very comfortable in your own skin.

Positive body language is the first step to boosting your self-esteem.The key to this is to walk with a straight back, shoulders pulled back, and eyes forward instead of on the ground. When you talk to someone, keep your eyes on them, and master the art of shaking hands properly. Your self-confidence will skyrocket!

“Never bend your head. Always hold it high. Look the world straight in the eye.”

Helen Keller

Make Your Own Mantra

Everyone experiences negative thoughts from time to time. It is an inevitability of being human. Confidence comes in part from your ability to cope with negative thoughts as they occur. You should create a positive mantra that has some meaning for you. To keep yourself feeling confident and positive during times of despair, repeat your mantra a few times.

I believe in never giving up, no matter what the odds. My mantra is, ‘Failure is temporary. Giving up is permanent.’

Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw

Prepare yourself

Being prepared is one way to remain confident, even in tough situations. Being mentally and physically prepared does not only mean being prepared for a part of your plan to go wrong. It also means anticipating difficult scenarios and being ready for them. So you won’t have to worry about not being able to deal with your emotions professionally and confidently during a time of crisis.

The first step to mentally preparing, is to envision what problems you might face if/when this situation should occur. In addition, you need to have a plan of action ready should this situation occur.

“There are no secrets to success. It is the result of preparation, hard work, and learning from failure.”

Colin Powell

Don’t Back Down

Standing up for yourself is crucial to self-confidence. Never allow anyone to put you down, or make you change your mind about what you want. As you gain self-confidence, you will also realize your worth and that you deserve better. Being confident in yourself is not only a sign of self-esteem, but you will feel even more confident after you do it.

“Believe in yourself! Have faith in your abilities! Without a humble but reasonable confidence in your own powers you cannot be successful or happy.”

Norman Vincent Peale

It’s not easy to gain self-confidence, but if you use the above methods in your life, you’re likely to see a spike in confidence soon. Self-confidence is centered around being positive, preparing for the worst, and standing up for yourself if necessary.
