“The best investment you can make is in yourself.”Warren Buffett
There is no flawless human on this earth. Everyone has some kind of character defect. The key to investing in yourself is learning how to address and ultimately remedy your character defects, no matter what they may be.
Understanding Your Defects
In order to fix anything, you must first identify what needs to be fixed. And if you believe you are perfect, you are deluding yourself. Therefore, take a moment to reflect on yourself, and identify what you want to change about yourself.
It’s sometimes the most difficult part of fixing a defect to admit you have one. By writing down your character flaws, you will become more aware of them and be more motivated to correct them.

Accept Changes Won’t Come Overnight
You cannot easily change your personality. It is a sad reality in this world that most people never achieve any results (and therefore many of them do not even try). Early on, it’s helpful to realize that you will most likely have an extensive journey ahead of you. As you list your flaws, be sure to include the ways you plan to fix them. This will increase your chances of success on your journey and make your path more clear.
It can also be helpful to break down any significant changes you plan on making during this phase. If you approach the change in self-image this way, it won’t seem so daunting. You are still human, so you will never be perfect. The most important thing for you is to continue to grow.

Replace behaviors with alternatives
It’s time to take action. Rather than focusing on all your flaws, find the way you want to be perceived (or acted upon). Suppose you have too many negative thoughts and are too cynical. If this is your character flaw, focus instead on replacing all the negative thoughts you may have with positive ones.
Catch your negative thoughts before they even enter your mind by being proactive. It will likely take a great deal of mental strength to overcome this challenge, and you won’t always succeed. The key thing is progress, so don’t give up.
“We can’t become what we need to be by remaining what we are.”Oprah Winfrey
Let Go Of Behaviors That Can’t Be Replaced
There are some character defects that are just plain wrong. There is no way to change them. If that’s the case, it’s time to get rid of them. In particular, if you spend too much time dwelling on the past, let it go and focus on the bright future that lies ahead of you.
A similar example would be getting defensive when someone describes your lack of coordination. If you find yourself getting agitated, breathe deeply and relax.
As part of this step, it is imperative to let go of anyone who may be nurturing your character defects. When you only experience negative thoughts around a certain friend, it’s best to let them go. Despite how difficult it may be, you’re better off without them in the long run since they only impede your progress.
“Invest in yourself to the point that it makes someone else want to invest in you.”Tony Gaskins
Never give up
Whatever you do, don’t give up, no matter how difficult it may seem to change yourself. Let go of behaviors and continue replacing them until you have overcome those character defects you are trying to eradicate.
This isn’t going to be easy, as previously noted. When you find yourself drifting away, think back to those goals you wrote, and remind yourself that you are investing in your future.
